Teaching

During my time as a postgraduate researcher, I was a lab demonstrator and teaching assistant for a variety of physical science modules including the University of Surrey’s FEPS foundation year ‘Engineering and Physical Sciences Laboratory and Project’ and year 2 physics ‘From Atoms to Lasers’.

Following my experiences assisting educators in the lab, I decided to pursue a graduate certificate in teaching and learning to explore teaching in more depth and develop my own teaching skills. Through this, I was awarded a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. My focus within the graduate certificate course was on neurodiversity and disability in physics and quantum science education and how this intersects with various teaching models from hybrid learning to in-person lectures and laboratories. I draw inspiration from my undergraduate experience as an undiagnosed autistic person to drive my teaching towards universal design and inclusive pedagogy.

My aim is to develop a truly accessible teaching practice for both formal and informal educational spaces where all students can explore a variety of teaching modes and develop into lifelong learners, giving them the tools they need to succeed regardless of diagnosis, background, or other identity characteristics.

Teaching Activities Summary:

  • Graduate Certificate in teaching and learning (2021-2022) — Surrey Institute of Education, University of Surrey

    • Part-time course on teaching and learning in higher education, for professional recognition from the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)

  • Education and Public Engagement module design team member (2021)— Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, University of Surrey

    • Part of the team designing a new FEPS module for undergraduate students across the faculty. I was involved with putting together workshop content and facilitator notes for teaching sessions on public engagement as well as helping design assessments
